There were three world championships in the very early years of the speed skating sport.

After the 1972 Winter Olympics, some athletes tried to
make money as professionals with speed skating. At the time, that violated the
Olympic Charter. As the ISU banned the speed skating tracks where such events
were competed, these competitions for professionals ended soon.
Only one World Championship and two European Championships
took place.
